Are you planning a trip by air or cruise that requires a layover or port call in Vietnam? Do you need to enter Vietnam during your transit, or are you simply looking to step out into the city during your layover? This guide clarifies all regulations, application methods, and precautions for Vietnam transit visas in 2026-2027 to help you seamlessly connect to the next leg of your journey.

What is a Vietnam Transit Visa?

A transit visa is a travel permit allowing foreign travelers to stay briefly in Vietnam while en route to a third country. This typically occurs when:

  • You are transiting at a Vietnamese international airport (e.g., Ho Chi Minh City Tan Son Nhat Airport, Hanoi Noi Bai Airport) and need to wait for a connecting flight.

  • You are a cruise ship passenger making a brief stop at a Vietnamese port before continuing your voyage.

  • You plan to leave the airport transit area during your layover to sightsee or visit family/friends in Vietnam.

In short: If you pass through immigration control, leave the transit restricted area, or stay in Vietnam for more than 24 hours at a Vietnamese international airport or port, you must obtain a transit visa in advance.

If you remain in the international transit area of the airport throughout your stay without passing through immigration, you do not need a transit visa.

🔑 Do I Need a Transit Visa? Three Common Scenarios

Please refer to the table below based on your itinerary:

Scenario Need a Visa?
Transit time under 24 hours, remaining strictly in the international transit area Check with airline for guarantee
Luggage checked through to the final destination, no need to re-check Check with airline for guarantee
Connecting flights operated by the same airline, check-in completed in transit area Check with airline for guarantee
Transit time exceeds 24 hours Yes
Need to leave the transit area to enter Vietnam (sightseeing, hotel stay, visiting) Yes
Need to change airports for transit (e.g., from Hanoi Noi Bai to a domestic terminal) Yes
Need to collect luggage and re-check, especially if different airlines lack an interline agreement Yes
Cruise ship passenger wishing to go ashore for sightseeing Yes

⚠️ Key Reminder: The standard for determining visa requirements is “whether you pass through Vietnamese immigration,” not just the length of your layover. If you are unsure, please confirm with your airline regarding luggage transfer and entry requirements before departure.

The Vietnamese government grants visa-free access to citizens of certain countries using ordinary passports (duration varies by country):

🚨 2026 Vietnam Entry Update: Pre-arrival Information

Starting April 15, 2026, all foreign travelers entering through Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City must complete the Pre-arrival Information declaration and present the generated QR code at customs.

Good News: This regulation does not apply to transit passengers who do not pass through immigration.

If you must leave the transit area for any reason (e.g., sightseeing during a layover), you must complete the electronic declaration before arrival to avoid delays.

🏝️ Special Regulations for Phu Quoc

The Vietnamese government has specific visa-free regulations for foreign travelers visiting Phu Quoc:

  • Foreign travelers entering Phu Quoc directly from abroad and staying for no more than 30 days are exempt from a visa.

  • This policy also applies to travelers transiting through international ports in Vietnam (by air or sea) before proceeding to Phu Quoc.

In other words, if your itinerary is: Country A → Vietnam International Airport (Transit) → Phu Quoc (Stay ≤ 30 days), you may not need a Vietnam visa. We recommend confirming the latest regulations before departure to ensure a smooth trip.

⚠️ Common Transit Precautions

  1. Confirm Transit Procedures with Your Airline: Luggage handling and transit requirements vary by airline. Check if your bags are checked through, if you need to re-check in, or if you need to change terminals.

  2. Passport Validity: Ensure at least 6 months of remaining validity; otherwise, entry may be denied.

  3. Apply in Advance: Transit visas cannot be obtained upon arrival (Visa-on-Arrival requires a prior approval letter). Ensure you have your E-visa before you depart.

  4. Stay Updated: Visa regulations can change frequently. Check our platform or official Vietnamese websites for the latest policy updates before each trip.
